Zero Waste Design
Here’s an interesting bit on Craft zine about zero waste design in the fashion industry, which got me thinking about eco-issues in the jewelry industry. Do you try to work in a waste-free or low waste way in your studio?
Do you advertise it?
What about packaging, do you use packaging made from recycled materials?

I have info on my website about being green. This extends from not using any gold in my jewelery (often comes out of the ground at the expense of the environment as well as local folks, although the ‘No Dirty Gold’ campaign is helping to turn this around), to using cold connections (little soldering) to fusing metals to using recycled paper, tissue, boxes, etc. I have also done an inventory of the chemicals in my workshop and have MSDS sheets on all of them. I constantly look for ‘greener’ materials to use. Both greener for the environment (sewer water) and greener for my health.
Great questions. I’d like to hear from what others are doing, too!
Very cool Cathy! Thanks for sharing!
I am not as green as Cathy is, but I try to recycle whatever / whenever I can. I save padded bags, boxes, bubble wrap, etc. and use those for shipping. I also save the paper from my shredder to use as packing material. Cathy’s practices give me good reason to pause, and I’ll start making my studio a little greener by adding MSDS sheets for my chemicals. Thanks, Cathy (and Elaine for posing the question!)
